Growing Instructions

The steps below are just the basics to growing our grasses in trays, these instructions will get you started. Please remember these instructions work for us, though you might find a better way.

When growing, you learn as you grow, bear in mind that no two crops are ever grow the same.

  1. Place soil, preferably peat moss or seed compost in plastic trays, with drainage holes. Lay the soil in trays a couple of inches deep and firm.

  2. Soak the required seed for 6-8 hours then rinse.

  3. After soaking the seeds drain off the water and rinse them under cold water. Now let the seeds drain  (we use a jam jar with holes made in the lid, then turn the jar upside down to let any water drain out).

  4. Sow the seeds at the rate of 8 to a square inch,  cover lightly with soil. Water so the soil becomes damp.

  5. Cover the seeds with a second tray or newspaper – this will protect the germinating seeds and keep them damp. Leave for 2-4 days .Don’t let them dry out

  6. Remove the tray and put on your windowsill. The grass should be a little over 2cm high.

  7. When the grass has grown up to 4 inches or so let your feline pet munch away.

The seeds should sprout between 3-4 days depending upon temperature, should reach approx. 10 inches (20cms) within 10 days.

Grower’s note: In warm conditions you may notice a harmless mould growing at the base of the tender shoots of grass. This is the same mould you may find on fruit and is not dangerous to animals. Simply wash this white or light grey mould from the plant and place the container in an area with good ventilation.

Health Benefits

Many animals like to munch on grass in the wild. If your indoor pet is munching on your houseplants, it is a good idea to purchase our mixed Wheatgrass seeds to grow. This way your plants will be safe from your pet and your pet will be safe from any potentially toxic houseplants.

Scientists are unsure why many cats, dogs, birds, reptiles and rabbits like to eat a small amount of grass per day. Some have suggested that it adds valuable roughage/fibre lacking in their diet. Some say that it is a natural aid in digestion helping with the passage of hairballs and gastric discomfort.

Packed with vitamins and minerals, cereal grasses like our mixed grass seeds definitely add dietary benefits to your pet’s menu. By their reaction you’ll know that they definitely consider this mixed Cat grass is a Purrrfect “treat”.

Simply place it on the floor when grown in a spot that is convenient for you and your pet and let them munch periodically. Alternatively, clip a small amount of mixed grass and serve it mixed with your pet’s regular food.

As the grasses grow, they concentrate chlorophyll and other nutrients in preparation for becoming a tall, fruitful plant. When eaten by your pet or turned into a juice, they provide very powerful body detoxifier.

Their high chlorophyll content is reputed to cleanse the liver, tissues and cells and purifies the blood. When eaten by a dog, these grasses provide an excellent natural mouthwash and breath deodorizer, so no more "Dog Breath".

The grasses contain vitamins A, B complex, C and E, trace elements calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium, enzymes and amino acids.

These grasses can be harvested and turned into a juice using a suitable juicer, can also be turned into a smoothie.

Our Felines have been on our Cat grass mix for the last 8 months, ever since one of our felines, Harvey decided he wanted to munch on a house plant.

Please be aware that many house plants are highly toxic, one nearly cost Harvey his life. Our advice is know exactly what plants you have in the home and whether they are toxic, or just don’t take the risk…. We have Cat grass and artificial silk plants now, which are safe for prowling felines.
There are lots of sites which have information about plant toxicity, just perform a search.
Our home is a safe and happy home, free from toxic plants and flowers.
